 MIGRAIN: NARRATIVE

Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

An example of how the Todorov theory can work in horror movies is in the film The Descent. In this film, the equilibrium stage is at the beginning when all of the characters are seen rafting. They are all best friends, who are happy and having a good time.

Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.
Stranger Things is a fragmented narrative because right from the start, we witness multiple parallel plot lines such as the laboratory, Eleven and the boys. We also see a non-chronological narrative strand in the flashback to Joyce and Will's conversation at castle Byers.

Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.
Look at the Harry Potter franchise for example. The Villain would be Voldemort, The Dispatcher and Donor is Dumbledore, The Helper(s) are Ron and Hermione. The Princess is Ginny, The False Hero would be Draco Malfoy and The Hero is Harry himself.
Give an example of a binary opposition.
A light switch is either on or off; in a sports match, a team either wins or loses; water is either hot or cold; something in relation to something else can be left or right, up or down, in or out.
What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?
socialist, patriarchal, liberal, racist, or capitalist ideologies.
Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?
Barthes has a theory where he believes that films have an enigma code which means that the film has a mystery and the audience needs to solve that mystery. He also believes that there are action codes so when the audience keep watching when there is action, for example when someone pulls out a gun
Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
  • Episodic narrative (the series)
  • Overarching narrative (the serial)
  • Mixed narrative
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)
Theme, plot, structure and characters are all important elements of a good story. Including these tactics in your content creation will ensure the message resonates well with readers
How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?
That they tell a story in 30 seconds or less.
