January assessment LR

     JANUARY ASSESSMENT LR:

WWW:

  • Good exam technique in question 4
  • Particularly the discussion skills
  • But also some vital lessons in exam technique

EBI:
  • Question focus is the key- in Q2 in particular. We'll look at social and cultural contexts in class- The mark scheme will also help.

  • Revise and add theory to Q1 and Q3.
  • Revise industry terminology ( Q2 ) mark scheme will help with that.
  • Question 4 needed media effects theories: read and focus on exactly what the question is asking.
  • Question 3, need to not drift into discussion on advertising.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Q1)The gold, textured colour scheme to the main text offers connotations of wealth, success
and luxury – reflecting both Stormzy’s recent success and also qualities associated with the
genre of music (rap/grime).

Q2)Dominate media industries through sheer size and power (conglomerate ownership)

Q3)BBC and Channel 4 shouldn’t produce popular programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing as
this is unfair on commercial broadcasters struggling to survive in the digital age. Instead PSB
channels should focus on programming that isn’t profitable so therefore not produced by
commercial rivals.

Q4)Cultivation theory (Gerbner) suggests that watching TV will, over a period of time, influence
the audience’s ideas and perceptions of everyday life. This could be argued to be damaging
to audiences if content is inappropriate or violent. However, UK television is regulated by
Ofcom to protect audiences (particularly young people) from inappropriate content.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.

4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.

I was able to write about 2-3 depending on which question it was.

5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?

Yes, I did, but I got mixed up halfway and somewhat sidetracked.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

I agree to the full extent that the media has a adverse effect on the viewers and users of social media. This is due to the rapidly increasing rates of new social media users associating with apps such as Snapchat and Instagram throughout the latest years. Apps like these cause severe bullying that therefore leads to anxiety and depression in the long run for younger kids, meaning that our generation cannot evolve and broaden its youth. This links to Gerbner's Cultivation theory that suggests that watching TV will, over a period of time, would sway
the audience’s ideas, beliefs (in this case young adults and children) and perceptions of everyday life - this could be as effortless as just going to school and consistently maintaining a good education and punctuality without feeling the urge to allow themselves to be absent in class due to depression or social anxiety caused by social media influences that try imprint exaggerated beauty standards for both genders. This could be further argued to be damaging
to audiences if content is inappropriate or violent due to its long term gradual exposure and direct control to media. However, UK television is regulated by
Ofcom to protect audiences (particularly young people) from inappropriate content to help them sustain a more healthier and growth mindsets instead of causing stunned growth in the child's mind.
